The Sterile Honeycomb: 50th Anniversary Edition
‘Poetry Anthology Published As Memorial to Village Man’ Record Advertiser, July 10th, 1975
The Sterile Honeycomb, a book of poetry by the late Arthur H. Axlerod, has been published by the Arthur H. Axlerod Memorial Fund, which was established by professors in the English Department of the State University at Buffalo through their contributions and contributions of members of the community.
Mr. Axlerod, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Axlerod, 185 East Hazeltine Avenue, Kenmore, attended Kenmore Elementary and secondary schools, and was graduated from Kenmore West High School in 1969. He died at the age of 23.
His poem ‘Wisdom Comes Dancing,’ was used as the theme poem for the 1967 anthology of original verse of the Kenmore-Town of Tonawanda Public Schools and he was a finalist in the National Merit Scholarship Program.
The book contains a Foreword by Robert Creeley, distinguished poet and a member of the committee which selected the poems for publication. Albert Cook, professor of English at the university, and Mrs. Earl Kassirer, author, were the two members of the committee who spearheaded the drive to see that Mr. Axlerod’s poems were published.
Mr. Axlerod had been the winner of the Haupt Award at the university in 1971 for the best poetry written by an undergraduate. His poems have been published in Anonyn, Choice, Spree, Reconstructionist, and the WBFO Program Guide. Three of his poems have been set to music, and one of these, ‘Goodbye On a Cold Afternoon,’ was performed at Villa Maria College in 1970.
